The short version
- Brushing does roughly half the job. The other half is between the teeth.
- Smoking stains enamel within a short time and drives gum disease.
- Dark drinks cause two kinds of staining, and only one polishes off.
- A professional clean removes what brushing leaves behind.
- Habits keep good teeth good. They do not close a gap or straighten a tooth.
- Brushing alone
- About half the job
- Floss
- Daily
- Cleanings
- Keep them
- Cost of most of this
- Nothing
Cosmetic dentistry changes the teeth. It does not change any of the following, and several of these do more for how a smile looks than treatment does.
1. Clean between the teeth
Brushing does roughly half the job. Stain and bacteria accumulate between the teeth, where a brush does not reach regardless of how good the brush is.
Floss daily. It is the highest-return habit on this list and the one most people skip.
2. Quit smoking
Nicotine and tar sink into enamel and stain it yellow within a short time. Heavy smokers over years often find their teeth have gone brown.
The cosmetic part is not the worst of it. Smoking produces more plaque, more frequent and more severe gum disease, tooth loss and mouth cancer. Whitening a smoker’s teeth treats the symptom and leaves the cause.
3. Cut down on coffee, tea and red wine
Dark drinks stain in two ways. Some of it is shallow staining a hygienist can polish off. Some works deeper into the enamel and does not polish off.
You do not have to stop. Rinsing with water afterwards handles a surprising amount of it, and keeping the cleaning appointments handles the rest.
4. Cut processed sugar
Sugar causes decay, and decay is the problem that cosmetic work cannot be built on top of.
5. Keep the cleaning appointments
A professional clean removes what brushing leaves behind, including tartar, which cannot be removed any other way once it has hardened.
It is also the appointment where decay, gum disease and hairline fractures get caught early, none of which are visible to you in a mirror. See white teeth and healthy teeth.
6. Widen the smile
A narrow smile hides the back teeth, so the eye sees no progression from front to back. A slightly wider smile shows that progression and reads as fuller.
Worth a minute in front of a mirror. It is also one of the things a cosmetic dentist accounts for when designing a case.
7. Fix your posture
Not a dental point, but it changes how a smile lands. People read confidence off posture before they read anything off teeth.
8. Practice
If you do not smile much, it feels awkward, and awkwardness shows. A mirror before an interview or a first date is not vanity; it tells you what the expression actually looks like and which angle suits you.
9. Aim for natural over wide
A forced smile is visible as a forced smile. The one that photographs well is the one that reaches the eyes, which is a matter of genuinely being amused rather than technique.
10. Treat what habits cannot reach
This is the honest end of the list.
Habits keep good teeth good. They do not close a gap, straighten a crooked tooth, restore a worn edge or lift a stain that has set into the enamel. No amount of flossing addresses a chipped front tooth.
Where the problem is the teeth themselves, the treatment depends on which problem it is. See which treatment fixes what.
