Dental disease

If your teeth are severely chipped, cracked, damaged or stained, you may be a good candidate for dental crowns. A crown fits directly over your existing tooth.

Both durable and natural looking, crowns are virtually indistinguishable from your regular teeth. They can also relieve the pain or discomfort that comes with a damaged tooth, which is the part patients often do not expect.

Crown or veneer

A veneer covers the front of a tooth. A crown covers the whole thing.

That is why the practice steers teeth already weakened by decay or large fillings toward a crown: a veneer would cover the appearance of a problem without addressing the strength of what is underneath.

Keeping them

The main cause of crown and bridge failure is dental disease, not the restoration itself. Plaque is a breeding ground for bacteria that feed on debris and produce toxins, so removing it removes the toxins too.

Brushing at least twice a day, flossing once a day, and an anti-bacterial rinse are what prevent the problem. Around a crown, draw floss through rather than pulling upward, so you do not loosen it. Never chew ice.

Care

How to make restorations last

The main cause of a crown or bridge failure is dental disease, which is preventable. The practice asks for these habits.

  • Brush at least twice a day, or after each meal
  • Floss once a day, and clean underneath a bridge
  • Draw floss through around a crown rather than pulling upwards
  • Use an anti-bacterial mouth rinse
  • Avoid hard and sticky foods, and never chew ice
  • Eat foods high in nutrients, especially calcium
Dr. Back is an outstanding dentist. I had revision of all my teeth that involved crowns and 3 bridges and I am so happy with the results!! I have perfect teeth. The color is perfect. Dr. Back is a true perfectionist and her team- Leslie and Yvonne , are the same. My teeth are flawless and natural looking and I receive endless complements. If you want flawless natural teeth, this is the place for you.

Answers

Dental Crowns: questions patients ask

Will a crown look like my other teeth?

Dental crowns are both durable and natural looking, and are virtually indistinguishable from your regular teeth.

Can a crown help with pain?

Dental crowns can alleviate pain or discomfort associated with damaged teeth.

What makes a crown or bridge fail?

The main cause of failure is dental disease. Good oral hygiene habits are what prevent it.

How do I floss around a crown?

Be careful not to pull upwards on the floss. Draw it through instead, so you do not put undue pressure on the crown and loosen it.

Crown or veneer?

Veneers are not a good choice for teeth already weakened by decay or large fillings. In those cases a full crown may be the better option.
