There is a lot of loose talk about what cosmetic dentistry does for people. Four things genuinely change after veneers, and they are worth separating from the rest.
1. Uneven teeth read as even
Teeth drift slightly over a lifetime of chewing and clenching, and enamel wears at the edges. The result is a set that reads as uneven even when no single tooth is obviously wrong.
Veneers address that directly. Gaps close, edges match, lengths align. Nothing is moved; the surfaces the eye reads are replaced.
This is also the clearest difference from orthodontics. Braces move teeth and take years. Veneers change the visible surface and take appointments. Neither substitutes for the other where the bite itself is the problem.
2. The color stops changing
Porcelain does not take up stain from coffee, tea or red wine.
For anyone who has watched their teeth darken year after year, or who has whitened and then watched the result fade, this is the change they mention. The shade approved at the fitting is the shade in five years.

3. Worn front teeth get their length back
This one goes unmentioned and does more work than people expect.
Front teeth shorten with decades of use, and short front teeth read as aged regardless of color. Restoring the original length is a change that looks entirely natural, because it is returning the tooth to a proportion it genuinely used to have.
The limit is worth naming: going past that original proportion is exactly where cases start to look manufactured.
4. The result is immediate
There is no gradual phase. The veneers go on and the teeth look the way they will look.
For people who have considered orthodontics and stalled at the timescale, this is usually the deciding factor.
What does not change
Veneers are cosmetic. They do not treat decay, they do not treat gum disease, and they do not make the tooth underneath any less likely to develop either.
Porcelain does not decay. The tooth bonded to it does, on exactly the same terms as before.
Brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular appointments matter as much as they did, with extra attention to the margin where veneer meets tooth. Anything that needs treating should be treated before veneers go on; a veneer over an untreated problem hides it rather than fixes it.
What to expect in the first fortnight
Temperature sensitivity for about a week. A tongue that keeps finding the new outline. Speech settling over a few days if the length changed much.
Then a short check-up to confirm the bite and the gums, and that is the end of it.
