More Americans travel outside the country for dental work than used to. The appeal is obvious: a lower quoted price and a trip somewhere warm. The arithmetic is less obvious than it looks.
What the quoted price does not include
Training standards vary by country. What is required to open a dental practice is not the same everywhere, and from outside a patient has little way to judge the experience and expertise they are actually buying.
Follow-up is the real cost. This is the part that is systematically left out.
Cosmetic work needs adjusting. A veneer is tried in, checked and sometimes trimmed. A bite is refined at a check-up a week later. Something chips in year three. A crown margin needs attention in year six. None of that is failure; it is what restorative dentistry is.
Locally, each of those is a short appointment. Abroad, each one is a flight, and none of them appear in the original quote.
Language and currency add friction to precisely the conversations where precision matters: what you want, what is achievable, what was agreed.
There is no practical recourse. Work that needs redoing gets redone locally as new work, because the practice that did it has no involvement.
None of this makes dentistry abroad bad. Excellent dentists practice everywhere. It makes the price comparison incomplete, which is a narrower and more useful objection.

- What are the dentist’s qualifications, and where can I verify them independently?
- Who makes the veneers or crowns, and where?
- What happens if something needs adjusting after I get home?
- What is included in the quoted price, and what is not?
- Can I see before and after photographs of their own cases?
A practice that answers all five plainly is the one to use. That is the whole test, and it filters more effectively than geography does.
